GitHub MCP Server — MCP illustration

GitHub MCP Server

GitHub’s official MCP server for working with repositories, issues, pull requests and Actions from an agent.

Published by githubgithub/github-mcp-server

What you are opening

Use it to let an agent read code, triage issues, review pull requests and check workflow runs. The remote server is hosted by GitHub; a local Docker image is also available.

How to set it up

  1. Create a fine-grained token limited to the repositories you want to expose.
  2. Add the remote server with the Claude Code snippet and replace YOUR_GITHUB_PAT.
  3. Start with read-only requests, such as listing open issues, before allowing writes.

Requirements and third-party terms

A GitHub personal access token. Give it only the scopes and repositories the agent needs, because the server can write wherever the token can. The hosted endpoint and the Docker image are not version-pinned; the reviewed source revision is shown below. Listed ≠ audited. Review scripts before running.

Before you add it

  • Read the instructions and review any scripts before running them.
  • Check tool access, required credentials and third-party network requests.
  • The source license and any resource-specific terms take precedence.
