Best MCP servers for Claude Code

Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers give Claude Code extra tools. Start with the capability your coding task actually needs: Filesystem and Git reference servers are useful starting points for inspecting local projects; restrict their scope before connecting them.

Do you need a filesystem MCP server?

Check Claude Code’s existing file tools first. Add the Filesystem reference server when you need MCP tools for a specific allowed directory; use Git for history and diffs. A filesystem server does not decompile binaries or provide repository history.

Set directory access before reading files

The Filesystem Install tab shows a local Node.js launch using @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem. Replace the directory placeholder with an absolute project path. If the client supplies MCP Roots, those replace the command-line directory list. Check list_allowed_directories, then read one non-sensitive file before enabling write tools.

Check the host configuration

Follow the Claude Code MCP documentation for local stdio connections, configuration scope and project approval. An allowed directory is a path boundary, not read-only access: write_file and edit_file can change files inside it. These candidates have not been integration-tested by AgentSkillsDir.

Match a new capability

Graphicle adds code graph and memory lookup; Reason Network connects teammates’ agent sessions. For audio tasks, compare earshot’s analysis with Audio Studio MCP’s Apple Silicon generation. jevcrawl uses an external, potentially paid Jev service to score web passages. Review each detail page’s prerequisites first.

Filesystem setup and related workflows

Open the detail page for source and setup, then choose the tool that matches your input.

  • Filesystem MCP: Package name, allowed directories, read/write tools and client Install tabs.
  • Git MCP: Repository history and diffs, separate from ordinary file access.
  • Reverse engineering MCP guide: Compare analysis engines when your input is a native binary or Android APK.

FAQ

How do I add an MCP server to Claude Code?

Use claude mcp add or a project .mcp.json file, following the Claude Code MCP documentation. For Filesystem, open its detail page’s Install tab and replace the allowed-directory placeholder before using the snippet.

Does Claude Code need a filesystem MCP server?

No. Check the host’s existing file tools first. Filesystem is an optional reference server for MCP-based file access to selected directories; Git serves a different need for repository history.

Is an allowed Filesystem directory read-only?

No. The directory list limits paths, while the server also exposes write and edit tools. Review tool permissions separately. If the client supplies MCP Roots, verify the effective list with list_allowed_directories.

Are these MCP servers safe to connect?

Listed does not mean audited. Read the pinned source, restrict directories and repositories, and try a harmless read in a test workspace. AgentSkillsDir has not integration-tested these candidates.
