Microsoft Word alternatives for writing and documents

Looking for a Microsoft Word alternative? Here are three routes: a browser editor, a desktop suite and the WordCraft application listed above. The notes come from each product’s own pages; we have not benchmarked them.

  • Google Docs: Browser-based documents that several people can edit at once, with version history. Its product page says Word (.docx) files can be converted or edited directly without changing the original, and that documents can be edited offline. Anyone with a Google Account can create documents; some features need a Workspace plan.
  • LibreOffice Writer: A desktop word processor from the free and open source LibreOffice suite, described by the project as “a powerful word processor for everything from quick notes to full-length books”. Its source code is under the Mozilla Public License v2.0. The page does not list .docx compatibility, so test your own templates before switching.
  • WordCraft: Listed in this directory as a Rust application for writing and document design, licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0. Open its repository to confirm current platform support and features before relying on it for Word-style work.

LibreOffice Writer is part of a free and open source suite. Google Docs can be created by anyone with a Google Account, though some features need a Google Workspace plan. Check each product’s current terms.

Can these Word alternatives open .docx files?

Google Docs says Word files can be converted or edited directly. The LibreOffice Writer page we checked does not list .docx support, and WordCraft’s repository should be checked for it, so test with one of your own documents first.
